The Sovereign is a contemporary lion artwork inspired by the majesty of one of Africa’s most enduring symbols — and by a sound that has stayed with me since childhood.

On safari trips through Africa in my youth, there was nothing quite like hearing a lion roar. That deep, resonant sound travelling through the darkness or across the open landscape would make my heart flutter with aliveness. Even before you saw him, you knew he was there. To me, it became one of the great sounds of Africa — ancient, unmistakable and impossible to forget.

There is no roar in this portrait, yet somehow I can still hear it.

The lion is captured in a moment of extraordinary stillness, his gaze lifted beyond the frame and his mane illuminated against the darkness. There is majesty in him, but no need for display. His presence alone commands attention.

For centuries, we have crowned the lion with our own ideas of courage, nobility and power. Yet his sovereignty exists beyond the crowns and kingdoms we have projected onto him. There is something more elemental in his authority — a strength that does not need to prove itself, a presence that can be felt before it is even seen.

Rendered in warm sepia and deep shadow, The Sovereign feels almost sculptural, suspended somewhere between portrait and memory. For me, it carries the feeling of those childhood encounters: the anticipation of the wild, the vastness of the African landscape, and that sudden visceral reminder that you are completely alive.

The Sovereign is a portrait of quiet power — and an homage to the sound that, for me, will always be the sound of Africa.

Created through photography and mixed-media composition, this large South African wall artwork has a cinematic, painterly quality. Its warm monochromatic palette, dramatic light and sculptural detail make it a striking statement piece for a living room, bedroom, entrance hall, office or hospitality interior.

The artwork is printed on premium canvas and custom framed to order in Cape Town. It is available in a Natural Obeche or Kiaat-Stained Obeche floating frame.
