The Dark Horse ..a black horse bows its head against a weathered field of Venus red, a colour chosen to express love, connection and strength.

For artist Romy Maxime, founder of Republic of Venus, this work is a personal reflection on being the outsider: the dark horse, the black sheep, the one who follows a different path. It honours the independence and quiet courage of living in a way that feels true to oneself.

Within the painting, the dark horse symbolizes intuition, freedom and inner strength. Its lowered head holds a sense of inward listening, while its powerful presence suggests a spirit that remains untamed.

The work also draws on Romy’s sister’s love of all things equestrian, bringing a familial connection to its symbolism. The earthy red surrounding the horse holds warmth and belonging, a reminder that individuality and connection can exist together.

The Dark Horse celebrates the beauty of difference, and the strength of finding your own place in the world.
