Summer, Suspended is an original black and white fine-art photograph created at Schlachtensee, a lake in West Berlin, on a warm summer morning. The artist’s friend had come to Berlin for the first time, and the day unfolded without a plan: swimming, climbing trees and surrendering to the sweet folly of summer.

Hanging upside down above the water, she appears suspended between childhood and adulthood, between the branch and the lake, and between one moment and the next. Her body is free, playful and entirely unselfconscious—the reflection below transforming the scene into something dreamlike and almost weightless.

Part of the Hymns of the Summer collection, the photograph is an ode to those fleeting seasons when time felt endless and responsibility belonged to another world. It remembers a youthful kind of freedom that few of us manage to hold on to: the freedom to be foolish, curious and fully alive without wondering how the moment might appear from the outside.

Created during one of artist and Republic of Venus founder Romy Maxime’s many years living in Berlin, the image carries the intimacy of a shared memory while speaking to something universal. It recalls the friends who once arrived in our lives carrying nothing but possibility, and the summer days that only revealed their significance after they had passed.

Photographed on black and white film using the artist’s Pentax 67 medium-format camera, Summer, Suspended is an original work of pure photography rather than a mixed-media composition. The soft grain, mirrored water and gentle strangeness of the inverted figure give the image a timeless, cinematic presence.

The artwork is printed on premium canvas and custom framed to order in Cape Town. It is available in a Natural Obeche or Kiaat-Stained Obeche floating frame.

Each piece is made to order in Cape Town and carefully packaged for secure delivery. Please allow 5 working days for production before dispatch.

Returns and exchanges

Each Republic of Venus artwork is individually made and framed to order, and for this reason we are unable to accept returns or exchanges for change of mind.
