This artwork, Never Alone is a memory of love, loss and the lasting imprint of a magical place. The little girl is the artist as a child at Les Chênes, the family farm at the end of Uitkyk Street, where childhood unfolded among orchards, vineyards, animals and the Franschhoek mountains.

She spent long hours roaming the farm with her sisters or simply alone, moving through its fields without fear. The family had many beloved animals, among them Sasha, a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Animals offered a language of love that needed no words: the warmth of a body beside you, the quiet instinct to remain close, and the comfort of knowing that another living being was watching over you.

The child leaning into the dog holds love and loss within the same gesture. Sasha represents not only one cherished animal, but every creature whose companionship made childhood feel safer and less solitary. Though those animals and that time have passed, their presence remains—carried in the body, the imagination and the deepest chambers of memory.

Les Chênes was the family’s private Camelot: a place of beauty and magic, where all good things seemed to gather and childhood felt protected from time. This painting returns to that world—not simply to recall how it looked, but to preserve how it felt: to be small beneath immense mountains, free to wander, held by the landscape and never entirely alone.

The artwork is printed on premium canvas and custom framed to order in Cape Town. It is available in a Natural Obeche or Kiaat-Stained Obeche floating frame.
