Calm Before the Storm is an original black and white fine-art photograph created along the west coast of South Africa. A solitary woman rests at the water’s edge beneath a sky gathering weight, her body quiet against the restless horizon. The stillness feels temporary—as though the sea, the air and the figure are holding their breath before the weather turns. The work is an ode to that soft, salty sea air, heavy with the promise of an almost tropical summer shower.

Hymns of the Summer traces those fleeting moments when the body and the landscape seem to speak the same language. Here, vulnerability is not fragility but openness. The figure rests without resistance while the darkening clouds gather above her, holding calm and tension, softness and force, within the same frame.

The photograph was shot by Republic of Venus founder Romy Maxime on black and white film using her Pentax 67 medium-format camera. It is a work of pure photography, not a mixed-media composition. The natural film grain and tonal softness give the image its timeless, cinematic quality, while its sweeping sky and strong horizontal composition bring atmosphere and emotional depth to a living room, bedroom, entrance hall or hospitality interior.

The artwork is printed on premium canvas and custom framed to order in Cape Town. It is available in a Natural Obeche or Kiaat-Stained Obeche floating frame.
